- 'GURUGRAM: A couple of audio clips containing a conversation between a man who is alleged to be the maternal uncle of bus conductor Ashok Kumar and a cousin of the juvenile accused in the Pradhyuman murder case have been doing the rounds on social media for last few days. In one of the clip, the man can be heard assuring the supposed relative of the juvenile accused that "he will fix everything" and the charges can be easily shifted to the Ryan School administration from the minor. In the call, the man alleges the involvement of a second boy in the murder case. He then asks the family member of the juvenile accused to wait for the release of the bus conductor before he can attempt to get the boy out of the jail. A civil court on Tuesday granted bail to the Kumar for lack of evidence. He was first arrested for being an accused in the Pradhyuman murder case. He was arrested on September 8. The caller further suggests that the family of the accused boy should wait for the CBI proceedings to get over before taking any further steps. Pradhyuman's father said that agencies are conducting a probe into the alleged audio clips and then only will he be able to comment on the nature and intent of these two audio clips. On November 8, a Class 11 student who allegedly wanted to postpone a parent-teacher meeting and exams was apprehended in connection with the killing of a seven-year-old boy in Gurgaon's Ryan's International School by the CBI. Pradyuman, a Class 2 student of the school, was found dead with his throat slit by a sharp-edged weapon on the morning of September 8. (The Times of India could not verify the authenticity of these audio clips.)'

- 'For a young musician, the dream to perform in the top slot of a margazhi kutcheri may take years to realise. But the concept of â\x80\x98kutcheri competitionâ\x80\x99 by Chennai-based organisation Paalam is giving many young musicians the opportunity to share the stage with senior musicians quite early in life. Not only that, the organisationâ\x80\x99s music appreciation programme helps individuals understand the nuances of Carnatic music to be able to appreciate concerts better. Founded by Bhaskar and his wife Radha in 2013, Paalam seeks to connect art, artists and art lovers. Its performance wing, Mudhra, has been focusing on the promotion of music, dance and drama. Bhaskar terms the kutcheri competition as "an idea that came as a flash" in 2015. For this, Paalam organises a competition for artists in the age group of 18 to 25. Participants are required to submit an audio recording of their performance of an hour-and-a-half, after which candidates go through two rounds of selection by two different panels of judges. The finalists - a vocalist, a violinist and a mridangist â\x80\x94 get to perform in the main slot of concerts held during Margazhi by Mudhra. The winning vocalist gets to perform with a senior accompanist while the violinist and mridangist are given a stage opportunity with a senior vocalist. This year winners, mridangam player Krishna Pawan Kumar and violinist Vaibhav Ramani performed with well-known Carnatic vocalist Sherthalai K N Ranganatha Sharma, while Aditya Madhavan, who won the vocals competition, performed with senior violinist B V Raghavendra Rao and mridangist V V Ramanamurthy. Paalamâ\x80\x99s music appreciation programme has two components â\x80\x93 a one-day session and a week-long programme. Students as part of the former are taught the basic rudiments of a Carnatic concert whereas the latter course introduces one to different types of music, raga and talas; creativity in concerts, the role of accompanists and raga identification. Another initiative of Paalam is the unique year round webcast of recorded performance of a music, dance or drama event on Sunday evenings which caters to rasikas across the globe. The organisation has also launched a web radio - a 24 x 7 radio service that comes as a free app â\x80\x94 this year. The app has a huge collection of Carnatic songs, lecture-demonstrations and panel discussions. Paalamâ\x80\x99s next line of service is its publication, the monthly magazine Samudhra." Its first issue was launched in 2001 and it has around 2,000 subscribers. It carries exhaustive interviews of personalities who have made a worthy contribution to art. "We do not go by popularity or star value while choosing the interviewees. For instance we have spoken to violin vidwan Sikkil Bhaskaran, kanjira player Somu and dramatist Venkat. They are seniors who are not in the circuit," says Radha, the magazineâ\x80\x99s editor who has interviewed more than 180 musicians. (The author is a music critic)'

- 'PUNE: The Maharashtra Navinrman Sena (MNS) party has asked the traders to stop their strike against Local Body Tax (LBT). The traders should open the shops, the party has appealed. The party members on Thursday distributed handbills among traders at Laxmi road and other areas appealing to them that they should stop agitating. â\x80\x9cThe closure of shops is leading to problems for all strata of society. Many students have come to the city for study and they are suffering due to this strike. The agitation is also promoting black marketing. There are other democratic ways available for the traders to protest against LBT. The traders should open the shops and stop the harassment of the people,â\x80? said the statement issued by MNS. The state government had replaced octroi with LBT on April 1. The traders have been opposing the new tax and had said that its implementation would hamper their businesses. Later, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan assured to meet them to sort out their problems. The traders had again given a call for a two-day token strike on April 22 and April 23 claiming that their talks with the government had failed. Others may either have to pay five times more tax or their business activity will be stopped.'
- 'a cut-throat competition with more players eyeing a lionâ\x80\x99s share in the segment. In this scenario, 2020 will see an increase in the provision of personalized services by eCommerce companies to their customers. Such initiatives will involve adding to the user experience and make the customer feel valued. So, their feedbacks and opinions might be given higher weight. This trend was initiated by social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and so on that started personalizing the newsfeeds of their users as per their browsing interests. 3PL players like Shiprocket, on the other hand, are also ensuring ample provisions for personalization in the form of features like branded tracking pages (for re-marketing) and the ability to create a customized eCommerce website without any monetary charges. Automation for Efficacy of Last-Mile DeliveriesUnabridged automation of last-mile deliveries can be seen running at full steam as hyperlocal delivery players like Swiggy, Dunzo, Zomato, etc. promise 30-minute deliveries to their customers. Similarly, Amazon has automated its logistical operations to bring down the ETA of multiple products by introducing same-day and two-day deliveries.2020 will further mark the introduction of such services by 3PL platforms that will empower smaller eCommerce players to automate their logistics operations for efficient last-mile deliveries. Features like real-time shipment tracking, COD acceptance, AI-driven courier recommendations, ease of scheduling pickups, optimized route planning, and so on will be sought after by sellers in 2020. They will help businesses to drive smoother last-mile deliveries and ensure reduced delivery costs, improved customer retention, and maximized profits. Drone Delivery Last year, the regulations for drones were launched in India. With it, we are soon going to see this novel delivery mechanism make inroads into commercial logistics operations. Multiple market players including Amazon, Dominos, Swoop Aero, UPS, etc. are currently checking their feasibility. Around 80% of Amazon packages can be easily delivered through drones and might make the eCommerce platform launch the service in India. The introduction of drone-based delivery will decrease the delivery time to less than 30 minutes and is expected to aggressively increase the market competition. It will also save around $50 million in costs for shipping companies. These were some of the top eCommerce trends for India this year. The industry is at a crucial juncture today and has a promising future with over a billion customers. - 'CHENNAI: The incessant rain has done something the state health department has been struggling to do for nearly seven months â\x80\x93 wiped away dengue mosquitoes and eggs â\x80\x93 at least for the time being. But these mosquitoes may have a fine breeding ground if the stagnant water is not cleared up soon, say public health experts. The â\x80\x98aedesâ\x80\x99 mosquito which breeds in stagnant water across the state, seems to have lost its battle to natureâ\x80\x99s fury. Hospitals from across the state, including Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur, have reported lesser dengue cases in the past week. "Rain disrupts stagnant water where mosquitoes lay eggs. This inhibits mosquito activity at least for the next few days," said state chief entomologist Abdul Kader. "But that doesnâ\x80\x99t mean people can drop their guard," he quickly added. Rain usually lead to increase in mosquito population.Though the number of adult mosquitoes comes down during monsoon, a majority manage to survive when they are out in the rain, say entomologists. For a mosquito, getting hit with a raindrop is the equivalent of a human getting hit by a 3,000kg â\x80\x93 the weight of an Asian elephant. Despite the barrage of water droplets, studies published in the proceeding of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA show how mosquitoes manage to survive by not resisting rain. "Most mosquitoes donâ\x80\x99t venture out during rain. They stay indoors or gather thick foliage. But they survive even when rain drops fall on them," said Vector Control Research Centre director P Jambulingam. They may be pushed down by a raindrop, but many manage to get away before they actually hit the ground. "They are light weight and they go with the flow. They never fight the droplet," said Jambulingam. For these adult female mosquitoes rainwater collected in gardens and open spaces are perfect breeding grounds. The female mosquitoes will lay their eggs in these fresh waterbodies. Young mosquitoes will spend about 10 days in water before they are ready to suck blood. The bottom line is to not let water collect in unused containers, say health department officials. But until then, the focus for the directorate of public health would be to prevent water-borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. "We are telling people to wash their hands, drink clean water and eat freshly cooked food," said director of public health Dr K Kolandaswamy. An advisory by the state government asks people to boil drinking water and avoid cut fruit or vegetables by street vendors. Watch Rain creates more dengue breeding grounds'

- 'Be it the Harappan, Mesopotamian, or Mohenjodaro civilizations, there have been several instances when the archaeologists have discovered the roots of our current lifestyle. These discoveries have given us proof that our ancestors were way ahead of us and were abreast with advanced technologies, which we might not be knowing. Recently, one such instance happened where the archaeologists have made a fascinating discovery of the ruins of a tavern in southern Iraq that dates back almost 5,000 years. The finding is expected to shed light on everyday life in the first cities in the world.Recently, a US-Italian team made the discovery in the ancient Lagash ruins, northeast of the contemporary city of Nasiriyah, which is already known as one of the earliest urban centers of the Sumerian civilization of ancient Iraq. The town, now named al-Hiba, has become a site of significant importance to archaeologists, as in the past, many historical discoveries have been made here. It is located between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. It was discovered that the city was developed on four marsh islands. During Sumerian civilisation, the region was divided into city-states. Each one of them was walled in and worshipped their deity. The discoveryFollowing the excavations, the researchers found an open courtyard that was used for dining purposes, along with benches, an oven, ancient food relics, and a 5,000-year-old moisture-wick structure that can be compared to a â\x80\x98modern-day fridgeâ\x80\x99 to keep the food cool. The team also discovered conical bowls that contained the remnants of fish. Also Read: This 74-year-old pasta sauce recipe sounds incredibly deliciousThe project director, Holly Pittman, was quoted by AFP as saying, â\x80\x9cSo we've got the refrigerator, we've got the hundreds of vessels ready to be served, benches where people would sit, and behind the refrigerator is an oven that would have been used... for cooking food.â\x80?As Holly explained, "What we understand this thing to be is a place where people could come to eat and that is not domestic," the archaeologists discovered evidence of beer drinking. "We call it a tavern because beer is by far the most common drink, even more than water, for the Sumerians,â\x80? she said, noting that in one of the temples excavated in the area, there was a beer recipe that was found on a cuneiform tablet. Also Read: Man cooks 'World's Oldest Mesopotamian Recipe' using 1750 BCE tabletAs per reports, archaeologists also found a recipe for an ancient beer at the site. Also, it has been reported that excavations restarted at the site in 2019 as part of a joint project between the Penn Museum, the University of Cambridge, and the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Baghdad, where they have been using new techniques such as drone photography and genetic analysis to secure data and information. The use of these modern techniques has enabled the researchers to gain a better understanding of the Sumerian civilization and how people lived during that time. Also Read: This is the only place on earth where purple honey is foundAs'

- "KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked the state government to allow only those pilgrims who are fully vaccinated and have tested negative in an RT-PCR test to head to Sagar Island for the annual pilgrimage and reconstituted the panel set up to monitor compliance of its order by replacing leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari and the state human rights commission representative with a retired high court judge. In a fresh order, the bench of Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava and Justice Kesang Doma Bhutia said retired high court judge Samapti Chatterjee would be chairperson of the new committee, which would have the member secretary, West Bengal Legal Rights Authority, as its other member. The bench held that the chief secretary would be personally liable to ensure compliance of all its directions. Additionally, the health secretary would be responsible for monitoring vaccination compliance of the pilgrims. The revised court order followed five pleas filed before the bench questioning the composition of the three-member monitoring panel with political and state government representatives and complaints that the state was not complying with the directives issued by the court. In its January 7 order, the HC, besides setting up the monitoring committee, had asked the government to strictly enforce its own notification that bars the assembly of more than 50 persons at a time in any social, religious or cultural gathering.Panel can ban entry if order not implemented The two-member monitoring panel has been empowered to recommend a ban on entry to Sagar Islands if it notices any shortcoming in implementation of the court's directions or finds that the gathering at the fair is leading to spread of Covid. On Tuesday, the high court also reiterated its earlier order asking the state to issue a notification under Section 3 of Gangasagar Mela Act, 1976, declaring the entire Sagar Islands as notified area within 24 hours. The state government had notified only the fair ground. While several thousand pilgrims are already at Gangasagar, thousands more are converging on Kolkata and making their way to the annual pilgrimage site. The South 24 Parganas DM officially inaugurated the Gangasagar Mela on Monday."

- "SHASTRI NAGAR: It won't be too wrong to say that Punjabis identify themselves with and appreciate hip-hop culture. And this is increasingly becoming visible with the ascent of desi hip-hop artists who have made it to the top of the charts around the world. Ludhiana too has its own star rapper whose recent music video got over two lakh hits on YouTube. For Gurnoor Singh, or Rapper G-nur as he is called, hip-hop happened way back when he started listening to rap music with attention. A mechanical engineering student from Shastri Nagar, G-nur might not be known across the country for his art, but the city certainly has a following for this desi rapper. The 21-year-old says he uploaded his fourth song 'Sacha Pyaar' on YouTube in July. 'I am surprised with the response this time... it has lifted my morale to produce better music,' he says. His previous two raps ' 'Paisa Hi Kudi Da Pyaar' and 'Teriyaan Udeekan' ' had got over 20,000 hits and hundreds of comments. 'I got interested in this genre four years ago and started writing my own stuff. Later, I started composing my own raps and used to recite it to my friends. That is how the love for rapping grew in me,' says G-nur. The youngster finds support, fan-following and a collaborator in his elder brother Dr Amteshwar Singh. Both of them get together to create a fusion of G-nur's raps and Amteshwar's singing. 'It is motivating to get such response without any attempts at publicizing my song,' says the rapper. He adds he performed at a concert organized to raise money for underprivileged school kids in the city in 2011 and has been performing at several institutions, apart from producing his raps. A fan of rappers Eminem and Hard Kaur, G-nur says he draws inspiration from these artists. 'Rap is becoming popular among listeners as almost every second song has a rap element in it. My objective is to convey messages with my lyrics, rather than sounding vulgar and meaningless,' he adds."
- 'country of origin.Heterosexuals fear giving rights to gays, will erode their own rights somehow. Gays are not asking for extra rights, extra legal sanction or reservations. Gays just donâ\x80\x99t want harassment. They want the rights that other citizens have to practise their sexual preference, to marry, divorce, adopt, etc. Gays cannot accept that in 21st century India, we still have a law which denies basic Constitutional rights to a section of the population. Yes, it is true that in a way gays are not normal. Which, loosely translated, makes them abnormal. But their only abnormality is that they cannot have children. And though this is an unfair comparison, if society can accept a blind person and give him regular human rights, why cannot gays be given the same respect and privileges? They are no more responsible for their genetic handicap than those born blind are for being visually impaired.Should the court recognize gay marriages? Stable relationships are always good, for society as well as for individuals. This is especially true for gay relationships which have been condemned worldwide for the spreading of AIDS through anal sex. Gay marriages, with regular divorce laws and rules of alimony, etc. will greatly reduce swapping of sexual partners and therefore also contain the spread of HIV, as it would if heterosexual men were also monogamous.Allowing gay couples to adopt will only create abnormal children raised in unnatural homes. Adoption by gays, after the general acceptance of gay relationships, is a step to be taken in the future. The amendment of Section 377 alone, which is not against adoption, will not help. The entire social structure consisting of the support system â\x80\x93 family, neighbours and school â\x80\x93 will have to come into play. There has to be openness and sensitivity in a larger quantum for the parents and the child. While it is true that the influence of an opposite gender (whichever case is applicable) is necessary to give a child a rounded personality, the love of gay parents is still any day the better alternative to an orphanage. Western nations that have approved the practice, have reported successful results. Even single and influential gays in India are considering adoption and donâ\x80\x99t mind being single parents.Heterosexuals, again, fear that gays will overrun the world and the human population will vanish. Gays will never be a majority. Liberalization of laws wonâ\x80\x99t lead to homosexuality spreading like wildfire. Why are people so scared? Gayness doesnâ\x80\x99t spread like â\x80\x99flu. Itâ\x80\x99s not like gays are going to walk around on the street wantonly raping men! On the contrary, giving legal recognition to homosexual relationships will keep gays within the community and minimize the chances of their hitting on, and forcing themselves upon, heterosexuals they are attracted to.Parents of gay kids are embarrassed and force them into lives of heterosexuality. Why? Yes, because there is the question of peer pressure and fear of social ostracism here. Parents should not be embarrassed by gay children. To force gay children into heterosexuality'

- 'MUMBAI: Private equity and venture capital investments in India may decline up to 60 per cent in 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report by consulting firm EY.Fund raising activity, which typically influences future investments, has also gone "cold", if one were to look at March's data of private equity (PE) and venture capital (VC) funds having raised only $85 million, EY said in a statement. In the past few years, investment activity has been touching record highs, and grew 28 per cent to $48 billion in 2019.However, there have been concerns on the same after the emergence of the pandemic, which is set to lead to a unprecedented impact on economic activity due to lockdowns and social distancing.EY projected Indian PE and VC investments at $19-26 billion in 2020, which is a 45-60 per cent decline over the 2019 figures. It said March 2020 saw investments of only $818 million, the first time in three years that the monthly figure has slipped under the $1 billion mark.In January-March, the PE/VC investments fell by 50 per cent at $5.1 billion.Rather than looking at newer private companies, investors will be looking at more private investments in public equity (PIPE) deals and also growth capital, it said."The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe dislocations across markets, and with many countries under lockdown, economic activity has contracted significantly," Vivek Soni, EY's National Leader for Private Equity Services, said.He said there is still a lot of uncertainty around the future trajectory of COVID-19, a holistic understanding of its ramifications on the global and Indian economy and the near-term economic trajectory of the country. The firm said travel restrictions and lack of in-person meetings have significantly slowed down the deals that are in process, and added that these deals will be revalued if not cancelled once the lockdown restrictions are lifted and more clarity emerges on future revenues, rebooting of supply chains.Investors are most likely to go for a defensive play which may include investments in companies in the technology, consumer goods (packaged essentials, personal and healthcare, food processing and retail), pharmaceuticals as well as sub-sectors like medical supply and services, biotech, agricultural products, edtech, chemicals and e-commerce sectors, it said.Activity in the financial services and fintech, infrastructure and real estate, healthcare, non-essential consumer Goods and services (durables, apparel, mobility, restaurants) that till recently attracted significant amounts of PE/VC investments is expected to slow down and may take some time to find traction, it said.Exits, which stood at $11.1 billion in 2019, are expected to shrink by 50-67 per cent in 2020, it said."PE/VC funds are more likely to hold portfolio positions for longer, work through the crisis and sell in better times as opposed to selling at deeply discounted valuations," it said.'

- 'CHENNAI: A weak job market and the dream of pursuing higher education abroad prompted more candidates to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) in 2012. There was a 30% increase in the number of candidates taking the test across India compared to the year before. Close to 85,000 candidates took the test in 2012, compared to 65,000 in 2011.Educational Testing Services, which administers GRE, said 2012 recorded the second highest number of test takers since the test began. "Registrations for the revised test were slow at the beginning of 2012, but began to climb from August, exceeding expectations for that period," said David Payne, vice-president and chief operating officer for the higher education division at ETS. Experts estimate that one tenth of the candidates are from Chennai.Delhi and Hyderabad send most number of candidates, followed by Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai. Coaching institutes that train candidates said the test was popular among two segmentsâ\x80\x93engineering, medical and pharmacy graduates, and those who want to pursue a management degree. With more than 500 engineering colleges in the state,in addition to IIT-Madras, the numbers from the state are likely to keep increasing. At least 15% of students in an institution are looking to pursue higher education. "The problem with India is that the number of high quality institutions is limited. Our best institutes are only comparable with those in the middle ranks globally. A graduate intent on pursuing higher education is 30 to 50 times more likely to get a seat in a good institution abroad," said Anand Kannan, managing director of online academyGREedge.com. Over the last few years, there has been increased interest in GRE among working professionals between 21 and 28 years, he said. "The job market is tight. Professionals find that growth in the company is not as fast as it used to be, and that having a specialized degree makes it easier to find a job. K Ramnath,GRE course director for TIME, said the rise could be attributed to the fact that more than 1,000 B-schools have started accepting GRE scores for admission. In 2012, the number of graduate and business schools using GRE scores grew by more than 14%. Administrative glitches are said to have affected around 2% of test takers in the country, with tests being rescheduled. "Such situations are not in my control. I plan to write to the university I am applying to consider this as a valid reason for the delay in producing scores," said Vaidhyanathan Raghavan, a final year engineering student.'
- 'NAGPUR: In a strongly worded letter to all affiliated schools, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has warned them to comply with the website policy. CBSE has warned that students of schools, which fail to upload the mandatory data on their websites by September 15, will be debarred from appearing in the board exam. The central board wants schools to upload data in a particular format and mention teachers' salary scales, enrollment status for each class, infrastructure available, etc on their websites. The letter sent by the affiliation department of CBSE says, "It has come to the notice of the Board that some of the schools have not yet developed their own website and have not uploaded the required information. Therefore to ensure the effective compliance, the Board has now decided to link compliance by the school with the registration of std IX and std XI candidates of each affiliated school. The school failing to comply with the above directions will not be able to register their candidates for board's examination and responsibility would lie with the school management". This letter comes as no surprise as the Board has been trying for more than two years to get affiliated schools online. TOI had reported in December 2011 how the Board was extremely miffed with the schools across the country for ignoring its circulars on setting up a website. In 2012, a lot of schools had developed their websites and even started updating it. In Nagpur, every school has an individual website, or has a sub-page for its branch if it is part of multi-branch school group. Random check by TOI of school websites reveal that almost all details asked by CBSE have been uploaded. The common data missing from these websites is the salary structure for teachers, but since there is still a week left for compliance schools cannot be blamed for it yet. The central government controlled Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) have complied in totality with the CBSE guidelines. There are five KVs in and around Nagpur and each one of them, except KV CRPF, has completed the formalities. The only thing remaining for KV CRPF is uploading details of staff salary for which they have already created a web link.'

- 'Bengaluru: Nykaa has raised a total of Rs 100 crore, or $13 million, from hedge fund Steadview Capital at a valuation of Rs 9,200 crore, or over $1.2 billion, according to MCA filings from business intelligence platform Tofler. With this, the online beauty and cosmetics seller has become the latest unicorn (valued at over $1 billion) in the Indian startup industry. The new round of funding comes as online retail business is set to enter a tough quarter, with sales restricted to just essentials and the overall slowdown likely to impact discretionary spending like cosmetics. Nykaa sells beauty products via its online store as well as 50-60 offline stores across the country. The funding includes the sale of shares by some existing investors and employees of Nykaa, which has been done at a discount to the $1.2-billion valuation. The latest round comes about a year after the company raised $15 million from TPG Growth, which had valued it at $724 million.Avendus Capital was the financial advisor to Nykaa on the fundraise. At the same time, Nykaa said that it is taking precautions as it told its vendors in a communication that its cash flows and income will be impacted. â\x80\x9cThe lockdown has already impacted business across industry, and this will have significant impact on the business cycle, including cash-conversion cycle...In light of this, we find it prudent to update you that there will be a delay in making payments of outstanding invoices to all vendors and partners,â\x80? Nykaa communicated on Tuesday. Nykaa confirmed the Steadview investment. â\x80\x9cWe are very grateful to achieve this significant milestone...In the midst of this unprecedented global crisis, we are working to ensure all our stakeholders are well served and that Nykaa emerges as a leading retail player in the industry,â\x80? Nykaa founder & CEO Falguni Nayar said in a statement on Tuesday. Nykaa, which was started by the former investment banker Nayar, is one of the leading players in the online beauty space, competing against e-commerce players like Amazon Fashion, Myntra and other niche players like Purplle, which was recently funded by Goldman Sachs. Nykaa counts Hero Groupâ\x80\x99s Sunil Munjal, FMCG major Maricoâ\x80\x99s Harsh Mariwala and Max Group among investors. The companyâ\x80\x99s net revenue more than doubled to Rs 1,159 crore at the end of March 2019 as against Rs 555 crore in the year-ago period. But what sets Nykaa apart is that it is one of the few unicorns that makes money, as it reported a profit of Rs 2.3 crore during the period against a loss of Rs 17.7 crore earlier.'

- 'NAVI MUMBAI: Shilpa Bhaskar, a young working professional who also does animal welfare, fell victim to the notorious mobile money transfer scam recently when she innocently tried to pay Rs 10 online to conmen who promised to provide medical treatment to a dog in distress in New Panvel. A total of Rs 5000 was debited from her bank account as soon as she had clicked on a link sent to her by the online tricksters. She has now given a written complaint to the Khandeshwar police station in order to ensure further inquiry into the matter."I had recently seen a dog with serious skin disease at New Panvel; and so was clicking its photograph in order to try and get some medical help for the dog. Just then, I was approached by a bespectacled youth who told me that he has already contacted some 'Animal Rescue Team' so as to help this dog. "However, he urged me to pay Rs 10 as online registration fee, since he did not have any money. I agreed to pay Rs 10 through the BHIM UPI money transfer mobile app, after getting a link on my phone from the conmen. But, after some time I was shocked to see that Rs 5000 had been debited from my bank account," recalled Bhaskar. She then quickly contacted her bank in order to stop any further financial loss. "Just then, I received another call from these very fraudsters who pretended to apologize to me for taking Rs 5000 and asked me if I have any other bank account where they could deposit this amount through the online process. When I told them that they can redirect this money to this same bank account, they cut the call. I don't want any more citizens, especially animal lovers, to become victims of this online fraud," she said. The honorary district animal welfare officer, Mitesh Jain, told TOI: "This online scam was very rampant in Mumbai last year wherein several animal NGOs were looted of their funds. Apart from asking their victims to pay Rs 10 for online registration, the fraudsters also directly call animal welfare groups by pretending to be officials of JustDial or Google in order to get some basic details."Jain further added: "The Karuna Parivar Trust NGO was also fleeced of Rs 32,000 by fraudsters who asked them to click on a link in order to update their contact details on popular internet sites. Once, such unknown links are clicked, they can be fleeced of large sums of money directly from their bank accounts. We have also urged various animal welfare workers and NGOs to be wary of such online scams."An official from the Navi Mumbai crime branch informed that they also get several cases of people being cheated online while trying to buy or sell things on various popular websites. They are our most iconic stars, almost all of whom are known by their nicknames in the press. I am not very sure about the authenticity of some of these pet names.Though Twinkle is far more widely known as Tina, I've never heard anyone from his family call Akshay Kumar, 'Akki'. "It's just something that some journalist made up which was picked up by everyone. Though fans call out to me by that name, I don't have the heart to tell them that's not me. I don't mind it since it shows I connect with them," Akki admits. What is it about today's stars in our entertainment industry that invites so much familiarity? After all, you don't hear Tom Cruise or Penelope Cruz being called TC or PC . So why do we refer to Sanjay Leela Bhansali as SLB or Karan Johar as KJO? No one would ever call Rajesh Khanna 'Kaka' across a crowded street although the whole world knows that's his pet name.Everyone from his mom to his girlfriend Anju Mahendroo to his wife Dimple called him that. But they call Mr Khanna's son-in-law 'Akki' without knowing his antecedents. How do we explain this demoniacal demystification of stars and stardom? For a large part it's the stars who are to blame. Today's stars generate over-familiarity among fans by their excessive public visibility. If Dilip Kumar still makes people stand up when he enters a room it's because he never attended too many parties, didn't give soundbytes to 57 channels bitching about his arch-rivals 'Devu' and 'Raju', didn't dance at mundans and prance at cricketing events. The icons of yesteryears were revered because they revered their own space. Ranbir Kapoor who shares his birthday with Lataji(sorry I can't even dream of referring to her without 'ji') tells an infinitely illuminating story about Asia's biggest icon."One day I was sitting with friends at the coffee shop in a suburban hotel when Lataji walked in with her sister. The jampacked restaurant went completely quiet and 60 percent of the people just got up from their seats and stood quietly as she walked by. That's stardom."Barring a few like Aishwarya Rai, stars today show scant regard for their own privacy. It's foolish to expect the public to respect star-space when they go about broadcasting their own lives and even ridiculing their relationships.Priyanka Chopra's one of the most well-mannered actresses today. But what was that breathing-into-the-phone with that hotheaded cricketer for a cellphone company? The Malaika-Arbaaz tamasha last week made me hide my face in shame. Malaika Arora's one of the loveliest women I've ever come across. But what she did for an ad campaign made me want to jump into ponds...er, a pond .Such over-familiarity in one's conduct toward the prospective consumer is bound to shrink the boundaries of privacy. "Analysis of census data before and after Gaja will give vital details of any change in the migratory pattern and eco-system of these water bodies," said Sai Saraswathi, professor of Vellore Institute of Technology. Last year, a total of 138 species of birds were recorded in Vaduvur, besides 110 species at Muthupet and 89 species at Udayamarthandapuram birds sanctuary during the census.'

- 'Hereâ\x80\x99s someone whoâ\x80\x99s really enjoying what he is doing. His learning curve says it all. After two back-to-back hits (Mere Brother Ki Dulhan and Delhi Belly in 2011), actor Imran Khan is all set to begin his current innings in an emphatic way. What keeps Imran going amid the onus of promoting his current movie slated to hit the theatres soon and balancing his personal life is the keenness to inch towards perfection. According to the actor, it is the penchant to think about the â\x80\x9ccutting edgeâ\x80? is what inspires him in life. â\x80\x9cIâ\x80\x99ve always enjoyed promoting a film. As an actor my responsibility doesnâ\x80\x99t end at the sets. When the producer has rested complete faith on an actor, it becomes the actorâ\x80\x99s responsibility to promote the movie. But at the end everything depends on the audience.â\x80? Quiz him on the marketing game and Imran says, â\x80\x9cMy promotional tours have always got me to visit a lot of places. Since my debut film Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na days, Iâ\x80\x99ve been going to different places for promoting movies. The kind of excitement an actorâ\x80\x99s visit creates is immense. But on the flipside, you donâ\x80\x99t get to see the city.â\x80? Imran has his agenda quite clear. The actor, who is doing Vishal Bhardwajâ\x80\x99s latest offering, is also very keen on working with newcomers in the industry. â\x80\x9cIn my three year career, I have worked mostly with first time directors. I would want to work with the next generation game changers. I am not looking for something similar to Delhi Belly. I believe in looking for the cutting edge,â\x80? says Imran who feels an actor must respect the directorâ\x80\x99s inputs while working with the latter. â\x80\x9cOf course, you can give your creative inputs,â\x80? he says. Probe him on whether he depends on Aamir Khanâ\x80\x99s inputs on any of his films and Imran says, â\x80\x9cHe is very busy as an actor. He has never read any of my movie scripts. We get to meet once a month.â\x80? Imran who is not a very visible face on the ad space, with only couple of endorsements, says, â\x80\x9cI never stayed away from endorsements. I only want to endorse a product that I use myself. I am particular about the creative ideas in ads. Thatâ\x80\x99s why I prefer select endorsements.â\x80? And when I looked at it, it seemed like I could afford a Ferrari. I already have a BMW and a Porsche,â\x80? says Imran. Amid lot of professional commitments, how does the actor manage to squeeze in time for his wife Avantika? Imran quickly says, â\x80\x9cYes, itâ\x80\x99s unfortunate that I donâ\x80\x99t get that much time to spend with Avantika. But I do make an effort in this regard. - 'LUCKNOW: In his first meeting with the advisory panel of health experts, set up to provide guidance and suggestions to Team-9 on Covid management and prevention, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday said a strategy should be prepared for the state, keeping in mind the current situation of pandemic and the challenges that may come up in future. The CM asked the panel to meet every day and convey its suggestions to the health or medical education department and also send a report to him. He also asked the committee to inform the medical institutes and hospitals about Covid treatment protocols and give necessary suggestions.â\x80\x9cThis is not the time for negative discourse. We have to come together in this fight and boost the morale of front line workers involved in the fight against Covid-19. Positive stories about victory on coronavirus should be publicised prominently in print, electronic and social media,â\x80? he said.â\x80\x9cUP has a population of 24 crore people. As compared to other states, UP should not lack in anything. Prevention is extremely important in Covid-19. As soon as symptoms appear, one should get tested. Doctors should advise patients on who needs oxygen, medicines and hospitalisation. Telemedicine facility should be used to help patients at home,â\x80? Yogi told the panel.Chairperson of the advisory panel, SGPGI director Dr RK Dhiman, said health specialists should give information about Covid treatment to people through media. â\x80\x9cPrevention is more crucial than cure in Covid-19 and infection can be controlled through Covid-appropriate behaviour like wearing masks, gloves, sanitisation and vaccination,â\x80? he said. The panel also made a presentation before the CM on various aspects of Covid-19 prevention.'
- 'ZURICH: The World Health Organization is reviewing Covid-19 vaccines from AstraZeneca and Chinese developers for possible emergency listing, its top immunization and vaccination expert said on Thursday, following the United Nation's health agency's listing of a vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech on December 31."We are under review of some of the vaccines from China, for the AstraZeneca vaccine. We are in discussions and beginning processes with other vaccines," WHO immunization director Kate O'Brien told an online social media event, urging vaccine developers to submit data on promising candidates. NEW DELHI: The government on Monday decided to export limited doses of Covid-19 vaccines to its friendly countries as a â\x80\x9cgoodwill gestureâ\x80? to meet some of their immediate requirements.Covaxin will be sent to Mongolia, Oman, Myanmar, the Philippines, Bahrain, Maldives and Mauritius while Bhutan, Seychelles, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal will get Covishield. While both vaccines will be supplied on a government-to-government basis, the procurement will be done by the ministry of external affairs (MEA), an official said. The decision was taken at a meeting of officials from health ministry, MEA, commerce ministry and the department of pharmaceuticals.'
- 'WASHINGTON: National security advisor Jake Sullivan said on Sunday that the United States, in consultations with its friends and allies, will consider its response against China if it turns out that Beijing is refusing to live up to its international obligations on the origins and transmission of Covid-19."We are not, at this point, going to issue threats or ultimatums. What we're going to do is continue to rally support in the international community," Sullivan told CNN in an interview."And if it turns out that China refuses to live up to its international obligations, we will have to consider our responses at that point, and we will do so in concert with allies and partners," Sullivan said when asked if the US is considering action against China to increase the pressure. There are two tracks that the Biden administration is operating on in terms of trying to get to the bottom of how Covid-19 came into the world."One track is an intelligence community assessment that President (Joe) Biden ordered. That has a 90-day clock on it. And, in August, the intelligence community will report back," he said."The second track is an international investigation led by the World Health Organisation, for which President Biden has rallied Democratic partners to say there must be access to China to be able to get the data necessary to understand what happened here," he said.Sullivan said that the administration is in the process of using its own capacities, own capabilities to begin to develop a clearer picture. "Then secondly, in order to build the kind of international consensus around this issue that will be required to put additional pressure on China, that takes diplomatic spadework," he said."It's spadework the President carried forward in a major way at the G7, getting for the first time something the last administration could not get, which was the democratic world speaking out with one voice on this issue. And then we will take it from there," he said.Reiterating that the US is not going to simply accept China saying no, he said: "But we will work between now and when this second phase of the WHO investigation is fully under way to have as strong a consensus in the international community as possible, because it is from that position of strength that we will best be able to deal with China."The origins of the Covid-19 remain a widely debated topic, with some scientists and politicians maintaining that the possibility of a lab leak of the deadly virus exists.China's Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) is near the outbreak's known epicentre of Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, where the virus first emerged in late 2019 and became a pandemic. More than 178 million confirmed cases have since been confirmed worldwide and at least 3.86 million deaths reported.China has been accused of withholding raw data and access to sites that would aid deeper investigation into how the virus came into being, and how it first spread.Scientists believe that the virus is likely to have'

Women rights activists and parliamentarians had called for the government to consider paternity leave so that men also do their bit in raising infants. In response, Union minister Maneka Gandhi reportedly said, "Men in India do not utilise their existing leaves in order to take care of their child. If men gave me one iota of hope by taking sick leave for childcare, then yes, we can think of mooting a proposal for paternity leave."Though she was shouted down for her "regressive views", sheâ\x80\x99s not far off the mark. In fact, while this reporter was searching for men who are very hands-on in raising their child, an exasperated wife asked us, "Do such men even exist?" They are evidently few and far between.'

As a teenager, I took my first steps into this industry, that has ultimately shaped me into the person I am today. In my time as an actor, Iâ\x80\x99ve met so many people who Iâ\x80\x99m grateful for. Iâ\x80\x99ve learned lessons, and so much about myself. I found my calling, it became my identity. Iâ\x80\x99ve had the privilege of working with some of the best people in the industry. So, to everybody associated with my career- be it for a minute, a day, or the last 12 years, I have nothing but gratitude for you.â\x80?She added, â\x80\x9cI went from being an immature teenager who was timid to an adult who is strong and bold. I was kid who loved playing dress up and dancing to the kickass numbers of the 90â\x80\x99s and now I get to do that for a living. I cannot imagine a bigger blessing. Today I watch a full generation and more perform to my numbers, recreating things that I have done, and the feeling is surreal. It can be hard to put into words how grateful I feel. I wouldnâ\x80\x99t be here without the support of my family, my friends, my teachers who gave me the confidence to believe I was destined for bigger things. A big shout out to my fans and fan clubs. You guys believe in me even when I have doubts, and that becomes the driving force for me to do better and believe in myself some more. You guys make me feel like the luckiest girl in the world.â\x80?Kriti, who has been in a relationship with fellow actor Pulkit Samrat since a while now, said, â\x80\x9cWhile the world looks exciting and glamorous, which it is :) itâ\x80\x99s also tedious and difficult. But then again, what isnâ\x80\x99t :) this is my 24/7! I love who Iâ\x80\x99ve become. The simple middle class girl has become ambitious and self-confident! If somebody out there is reading this, unaware of what path to take, I hope my story serves you well and you find the confidence to take that chance, and jump right into doing the things you love. Maybe 12 years down the line, youâ\x80\x99ll find yourself where I am, today :) overwhelmed with gratitude and giddy with excitement! Looking forward to many many many more years of this feeling.â\x80?Kriti, who was down with a bout of malaria several months ago, took time to recuperate and said that it had been tough to get back her fitness levels. The actress said that she was glad to slowly regain her strength and recently shared a picture of her pole dancing exercise routine, which she captioned, â\x80\x9cHello pole! We meet again. - 'Opticociliary veins in a primary optic nerve sheath meningioma. A 59-year-old man developed painless visual loss in his left eye over a one-year period, with rapid progression to blindness over three months. Ocular examination of the left eye revealed proptosis, marked optic disk pallor, dilated retinal veins, and congeries of vessels at the disk margin (opticociliary veins). His right eye was unremarkable. Fluorescein angiography and histopathologic examination confirmed the presence of opticociliary veins communicating between branches of the central retinal vein and the adjacent choroidal vasculature. Primary orbital optic nerve meningioma associated with opticociliary veins was diagnosed. Outside-the-ribcage thoracic migration of a spigelian hernia. Lung and spigelian hernia are both extremely rare diseases, and their combined and simultaneous appearance in the same patient, causing the small bowel to shift from the abdomen towards the thorax external to the ribcage is even more unusual. Here, we report such a case, supported by comprehensive iconography and a detailed discussion of the hypothetical pathogenesis.'
- 'Rapid generation of sequence variation during primary HIV-1 infection. OBJECTIVE: HIV-1 undergoes extensive genetic variation in infected individuals. The extent of genetic variation has been examined in patients with AIDS, but little is known regarding the appearance of HIV-1 genetic variation immediately following infection during the primary phase of HIV-1 infection prior to seroconversion.DESIGN: We examined HIV-1 genetic variation during this early phase of HIV-1 infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleotide sequence analysis of the V4 by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nucleotide sequence analysis of the V4 variable region and the CD4-binding domain.RESULTS: Our results demonstrate that extensive sequence variation is seen early after infection, although a predominant HIV-1 species is maintained.CONCLUSIONS: The type of variants that occur are dynamic, changing over time, and the mutations seen are consistent with those expected from random occurrence, unlike the pattern of variation previously reported during later stages of disease.'
- "Shall we upgrade one-dimensional secondary settler models used in WWTP simulators? - An assessment of model structure uncertainty and its propagation. In WWTP models, the accurate assessment of solids inventory in bioreactors equipped with solid-liquid separators, mostly described using one-dimensional (1-D) secondary settling tank (SST) models, is the most fundamental requirement of any calibration procedure. Scientific knowledge on characterising particulate organics in wastewater and on bacteria growth is well-established, whereas 1-D SST models and their impact on biomass concentration predictions are still poorly understood. A rigorous assessment of two 1-DSST models is thus presented: one based on hyperbolic (the widely used Tak?cs-model) and one based on parabolic (the more recently presented Pl?sz-model) partial differential equations. The former model, using numerical approximation to yield realistic behaviour, is currently the most widely used by wastewater treatment process modellers. The latter is a convection-dispersion model that is solved in a numerically sound way. First, the explicit dispersion in the convection-dispersion model and the numerical dispersion for both SST models are calculated. Second, simulation results of effluent suspended solids concentration (XTSS,Eff), sludge recirculation stream (XTSS,RAS) and sludge blanket height (SBH) are used to demonstrate the distinct behaviour of the models. A thorough scenario analysis is carried out using SST feed flow rate, solids concentration, and overflow rate as degrees of freedom, spanning a broad loading spectrum. A comparison between the measurements and the simulation results demonstrates a considerably improved 1-D model realism using the convection-dispersion model in terms of SBH, XTSS,RAS and XTSS,Eff. Third, to assess the propagation of uncertainty derived from settler model structure to the biokinetic model, the impact of the SST model as sub-model in a plant-wide model on the general model performance is evaluated. A long-term simulation of a bulking event is conducted that spans temperature evolution throughout a summer/winter sequence. The model prediction in terms of nitrogen removal, solids inventory in the bioreactors and solids retention time as a function of the solids settling behaviour is investigated. It is found that the settler behaviour, simulated by the hyperbolic model, can introduce significant errors into the approximation of the solids retention time and thus solids inventory of the system. We demonstrate that these impacts can potentially cause deterioration of the predictive power of the biokinetic model, evidenced by an evaluation of the system's nitrogen removal efficiency. The convection-dispersion model exhibits superior behaviour, and the use of this type of model thus is highly recommended, especially bearing in mind future challenges, e.g., the explicit representation of uncertainty in WWTP models."

- 'Investors have seen the fabulous returns generated by ULIPS in the past 5-6 years, but are wary of a crash of the likes witnessed post Lehman Brothers collapse in October 2008. LICâ\x80\x99s latest offering, Wealth Plus, is an 8-year fixed-term product, where LIC guarantees the highest Net Asset Value (NAV) recorded over the first seven years of the policy. Such products have been introduced by several other private life insurance companies and have done well after the financial crisis.Wealth Plus has two options â\x80\x94 a single premium one and another plan where premium is payable for the first three years. The minimum annual premium is Rs 40,000 under the single premium option and Rs 20,000 under the 3-year premium paying term. The sum insured is a modest 1.25X the premium for single premium policies and 5X the annualised premium for policies with a 3-year payment term. The insurance cover continues for two years after the term of the policy.According to the illustration provided by LIC, a 30-year old who invests a single premium of Rs 40,000 can look forward to getting back Rs 64,679 if the fund value appreciates 10% annually. If the appreciation is 6%, he can expect to get back Rs 47,377 at the end of eight years. On the other hand, if the same investor chooses to invest Rs 20,000 for the first three years, he can look forward to getting Rs 91,445 if the fund appreciates 10% and Rs 70,309 if the appreciation is 6%.You can get surrender benefits only after the completion of the third policy anniversary both under single and 3-year Premium Paying Term contract. The surrender value will be the policyholderâ\x80\x99s fund value at the date of surrender. There will be no surrender charge. You can also avail of the partial withdrawal facility.AnalysisEvery investor knows the trade-off between risk and reward. But few know about the cost embedded in a guaranteed return. For most investors, guaranteed and assured return are music to their ears, particularly when they have gone through a bout of volatility in the market. In short, the working behind such products is that the highest NAV is assured by shifting assets to debt as timed by the fund manager. The downside is that the fund managers cannot allow spikes in the schemeâ\x80\x99s NAV.'
- 'NEW DELHI: Uncertainty looms large over 1% cut in central sales tax (CST) from April 1 this year. The finance ministry is examining whether to go in for the reduction this year or eliminate it altogether when the goods and services tax (GST) rolls out in 2010.The Centre would face a burden of Rs 6,000 crore if the CST is cut by 1% from the next fiscal, in accordance with the agreed compensation formula with the states. This would be in addition to Rs 12,000 crore in lieu of the 2% cut it is already bearing. The Centre has written to the empowered panel with regard to implementation of the other components of the formula, a government official, who did not wish to be identified, said. The final call would be taken after the committees response to its letter. The compensation package agreed upon by the Centre and the states for CST phaseout from April 1, 2007, included VAT on imports, abolishing Form D, budgetary support, hike in VAT floor rate from April 1, 2008, transfer of power to levy service tax on certain services, and removal of additional excise duty (AED) on tobacco products and textiles. The Centre abolished Form D that allowed government departments and enterprises to make purchases without paying VAT and removed AED on tobacco in 2007. On their part, the states have been reluctant for a hike in the floor rate of VAT or removal of AED on textiles and imposition of VAT.'
- 'a loan default. The airline gave itself 18 months to turn around. It managed in about 12. "We have done a lot of hard work. Whatâ\x80\x99s important is that we have the fundamental setup now," says Ball, who joined the airline in September 2014. Ballâ\x80\x99s appointment as CEO was announced on May 28, 2014, the same day that Jet Airways reported losses of Rs 2,153 crore for the quarter ended March 2014. That year, it posted its seventh straight year of losses. Ball, a turnaround expert, had joined Jet after heading a two-year restructuring programme at Air Seychelles, in which Etihad owns 40 per cent stake. He had come to an airline which was 10 times the size of his previous employer. And he had joined a position which three previous executives had quit in a span of 15 months. Ball set to work with the Jet and the Etihad team focussing on six key areas: overhauling branding and marketing; restructuring its network; cost saving through operational efficiencies, renegotiation of contracts and rejigging sales and distribution; liquidity and cash flow; employee management; cleaning up the balance sheet. "There were over 120 operational initiatives that targeted generating over $300 million (Rs 2,070 crore) of operating cash flow annually. The major areas of focus were in commercial, engineering & maintenance, fuel management, flight operations and inflight," says Nikhil Shah, managing director of Alvarez & Marsal India, a professional services firm often used by Etihad. Shah, a seasoned doctor of sick companies, calls Jet "a tough assignment". The rebranding exercise was the toughest, according to Ball. Over the years, Jet had diluted its premium carrier brand position by introducing low fare arms Jet Lite and Jet Konnect. Ball and team decided to sort this out first. "That decision to go under one full service brand was for me one of the most critical. It was a big, big first step. I had to convince the chairman (Goyal). We had JetLite and Jet Konnect that added a lot of confusion around the business," he recalls. At Etihadâ\x80\x99s behest, Jet reworked its entire international network, shifting its hubs to Abu Dhabi and Amsterdam from Brussels, increasing short haul international flights and depending on codeshare agreements with Etihadâ\x80\x99s partners to ferry its passengers forward. Codeshares are agreements wherein airlines sell each otherâ\x80\x99s flights, often sharing flight codes. Even though industry experts say Jet was being reduced to a feeder carrier for Etihad, they also point out this was Jetâ\x80\x99s best option, given it had limited cash for its own international expansion. The Etihad-Jet combine gave them the biggest market share of international passengers out of India. Traffic between Jet and Etihad rose by more than five times to 550,306 in FY15 from 104,809 the previous year. Next, Jet went into the long winded procedure of re-negotiating maintenance and engineering contracts, aided by significant clout of partner Etihad. The airline roped in KM Unni, a veteran from Air India to head the function. Unniâ\x80\x99s team and some'

The yet-to-be-titled film is touted to be a romantic drama. Speaking to Kochi Times earlier the director shared that the upcoming film discusses about love as an emotion and feeling, rather than focusing on its end result. Biju Menon plays a government servant working in Thiruvananthapuram, in the film. â\x80\x9cLove is not always defined by the end result, like getting married. What happens when we love and the journey is what we are showing. I was supposed to do a different movie. But this story, more than just the love story element, is something that stuck with me immediately,â\x80? Vishnu Mohan told Kochi Times. He furtner added, â\x80\x9cAfter Meppadiyan, people have some expectations. This is for the same sort of mature audience who liked the earlier film. People who have loved at least once in their life or known the feeling of falling in love will connect with the movie. We may not always reveal our feelings even when we fall in love and things like age may not be a factor in love. We have a lot of beautiful moments in the film exploring love.â\x80?'

- 'GHAZIABAD: In a suspected case of honour killing, barely 40 kms away from the national capital, a 21-year-old polytechnic student was allegedly strangulated to death by the relatives of a girl in Khimavuti village, Muradnagar, on Thursday. The deceased, Sandeep Pal, was found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard with his shirt tied around his neck at 7am. According to Sandeep's elder brother, Pintu Pal (23), the incident occurred when they were on their way to the field to defecate at 5am. In his police statement, Pintu alleged that while they were in the field, one Mukesh and his henchmen apprehended Sandeep and forcibly took him to a nearby jaggery factory, saying they had some personal work with him. In the meantime Pintu went a little distance ahead to relieve himself. Soon after this, when Pintu tried searching for his brother, he could not locate him. He said he received a phone call from Sandeep's friend, Monu, at 7 am, saying his dead body had been spotted in an orchard, around 1.5km from his home. When TOI visited Sandeep's home on Thursday afternoon, grieving relatives were awaiting the arrival of his dead body after an autopsy in Ghaziabad. "Sandeep had no reason to commit suicide. We reached the spot and found Sandeep's body hanging from a tree. His feet were on the ground and the branch from which he was hanging was too low for him to hang himself to death," said Pintu, a student of commerce in Kushal Pal Degree College, Muradnagar. Relatives alleged Mukesh committed the murder with the help of his henchmen. "Mukesh had come to our home on Wednesday and threatened Sandeep with dire consequences, alleging Sandeep was harassing his daughter, who works at a private company in Raj Nagar, Ghaziabad. He had threatened to kill Sandeep if he did not desist from approaching her," said Jeetender Pal, Sandeep's uncle. An FIR, under sections pertaining to murder (302), conspiracy (120B) and causing disappearance of evidence of offence (201) of the IPC, was registered at Muradnagar police station against Mukesh, a 50-year-old resident of the same village. Autopsy reports, which arrived in the evening, established that Sandeep died of asphyxiation, police said. "The viscera has been preserved for further analysis," said Muradnagar SHO R P Sharma. Sandeep was a second-year polytechnic student in Devender Singh Institute of Management & Technology (DSIMT) located in Guldhar area of Muradnagar. His father, Sohan Lal Pal, is employed as a gardener in the horticulture department of the municipal corporation of Delhi. Khimavuti is largely dominated by members of the Tyagi community. Sandeep's family belongs to the minority community of Pals. The accused Mukesh owns a kolhu (jaggery production factory) in the same village.'

- "Is an annual check-up a life-saver or medicalising trivial niggles? So sick was the Indian government of the procrastinating Indian citizen who refused to opt for preventive health care, that it bribed them to see a doctor. In 2012, the then finance minister offered a plan to save up to Rs 5,000 on tax by opting for an annual preventive check-up. While Indians refuse to visit a hospital unless they need to be brought in on a stretcher, Americans, they say, canâ\x80\x99t get enough. In the US, annual check-ups account for more than 8 per cent of doctor visits, and cost the health care system $8 billion a year. Each visit takes around 23 minutes, adding up to a total of 17 million hours each year spent checking 45 million healthy people. In Europe, a study revealed that many routine checkups led to over-diagnosis and over-treatment of relatively mild health problems, leading some patients to take medication for years with no apparent benefit. But with the average age of patients diagnosed with cardiac problems dipping, and lifestyle-related disorders on the rise, doctors here are keen to catch the bug early. Thus, avoiding a case of â\x80\x98surpriseâ\x80\x98 heart attack, like actor Farooq Sheikhâ\x80\x99s. Don't wait for a heart attack, says Dr Lekha Pathak, cardiologist. One in 10 Indians suffer from hypertension. And most arenâ\x80\x99t aware of it. For people above 40, I suggest a twice-a-year check up. This should include Electrocardiography (ECG), cardiac stress test, 2D echo and blood biochemistry to check blood sugar, kidney and lipid profile. Smokers and those who have a family history of cardiac illness, diabetes and hypertension are part of a high risk group. They must start with these tests at 30. Often, those suffering a â\x80\x98surpriseâ\x80\x99 heart attack are those who have lived with symptoms of high cholesterol and hypertension, without knowing it. This is not specific to an age group or sex. But 40 per cent of patients suffering from cardiac issues tend to be below 40.Start gynaec visits in mid-20s, says Dr Rajeev Chhabra, gynaecologist Indian women are just not in the habit of visiting a gynaecologist regularly. In fact, most women donâ\x80\x99t go to a doctor even when suffering from the symptom of a illness. Itâ\x80\x99s always a last minute visit when the pain gets unbearable. For women above 45, they need to start caring for their bones, since menopause will soon strike. Start with the following tests: CBC, Creatinine levels, SGPT and SGOT levels, calcium and phosphorus, USG (ultrasonography), PAP smear and mammogram. Women between 23 and 30 need to take annual thyroid tests, prolactin, DHEA-sulfate test and ultrasonography. These are purely preventive tests ensure that when they do decide to conceive, they encounter no complications. Lifestyle disorders like Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOD) are detected at such times. In case you are sexually active with multiple partners and donâ\x80\x99t insist on the use of condoms, take the PAP smear test every year. For every known diabetic, there's one undiagnosed, says Dr Rajiv Kovil,"
- '— -- For some Philadelphia youth, their after-school home was once a bar.\nWhen Kevin Upshur's mother passed away 10 yeas ago, he decided to transform his once family-owned bar into the Strawberry Mansion Learning Center, a safe haven for the children of his Philadelphia community.\nThe center provides children with books, unlimited computer access, healthy meals and the opportunity to be mentored by the center's volunteers.\n"My mom had asked me to work and take care of some young people because of all the violence in the community," Upshur told ABC News. Now, by providing resources and a safe space for the children, the social worker is doing just that.\nThe not-for-profit is open to all children in the community, so long as their parents are willing to stop by and sign them up. There are up to 25 kids in the center on any given day, according to Upshur, including some former mentees in college who now return to the Learning Center to study long hours -- sometimes overnight -- for their exams.\n"[The kids] kind of really flop down when they come in and they feel good about being there," Upshur said of the comfortable environment he aims to provide for the children. The center also takes its children on field trips and frequently collaborates with local charities.\nUpshur said he especially prioritizes reading and educating the children on history and African-American studies.\n"We see them grow and mature in a way where they become more conscious about who they are and what they need to do," Upshur said. "And thatâ\x80\x99s one of the most rewarding things that I get."\nThe center relies on donations and fundraisers, such as fish fries and an upcoming skating party, to stay afloat. Funding often presents a challenge for Upshur, who is looking to replace old computers and add a TV so that the children have an opportunity to watch the news and other channels they may not have access to at home.\nDespite these obstacles, Upshur hopes to expand the space and make it a permanent institution that can serve Strawberry Mansion's generations to come.\n"I sit there sometimes and it brings tears to my eyes to see what has happened and what it has become," he said. "It's about people coming together to make a difference."'

- 'The development also comes at a time when overall two-wheeler sales have hit a rough patch. Bajaj Auto is in advanced discussions to pick up a stake in Bengaluru-based bicycle and low-speed electric scooter rental startup Yulu as part of its ongoing funding round of over $15-20 million, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The Pune-based two-wheeler manufacturer is in talks to invest $6-8 million in the current round as it looks to ride on the fast growing urban mobility space.â\x80\x9cBajaj is currently doing due diligence on the company and the deal may close in the coming weeks,â\x80? said one of the sources mentioned earlier. Advt The deal may also lead to a closer partnership between Yulu and Bajaj where the automaker may manufacture vehicles specifically for the company, one of the sources mentioned earlier said. Yulu is also in talks to bring in other new financial investors.Yulu co-founder RK Misra said the company â\x80\x9ccanâ\x80\x99t comment on speculationâ\x80?, while a Bajaj Auto spokesperson declined to comment. If the transaction materialises, it will be the first direct bet by a local automaker in a ride-hailing company in India even though investments in the broader mobility space have been picking up. Hero MotoCorp invested in electric bike manufacturer Ather Energy, while its chairman Pawan Munjal has personally invested in scooter rental startup Vogo. South Koreaâ\x80\x99s Hyundai and Kia Motors invested $300 million in Ola earlier this year. Yulu has till now raised about $7 million from backers like Blume Ventures, Wavemaker Partners and 3one4 Capital, besides top entrepreneurs like Flipkartâ\x80\x99s Binny Bansal and InMobiâ\x80\x99s Naveen Tewari. The startup is present in Bengaluru, Navi Mumbai and Pune with over 8,000 cycles and 500 e-scooters, according to reports. The company also recently partnered with Uber, where users can book its vehicles using the US-based ride-hailing majorâ\x80\x99s app.The development also comes at a time when overall two-wheeler sales have hit a rough patch. Total two-wheeler sales in May declined 6.7% to 1,726,206 units compared to 1,850,698 units in the year-ago month, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam). Advt Experts tracking the space said that OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) like Bajaj Auto missed out on upcoming segments in shared mobility, like the e-rickshaw market, which has already seen sale of 2 million units by players who basically assembled the vehicles.â\x80\x9cIn micro-mobility, the form factor is really important. So OEMs donâ\x80\x99t want to miss this opportunity. - 'CHENNAI: The vehicle manufacturing industry may have missed the ambitious targets set in the Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2020, but the auto parts sector, despite a significant drop in its revenue in FY2013-14, is very much on target. And the good news is, although component exports have not done as well as the AMP targeted, the auto parts share in exports is on the rise even in FY2013-14, the worst year in auto industry's history in recent times, and the imported parts supplies are down year-on-year, said a top official of Automotive Components Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA). "Overall, the automotive industry will miss its AMP target but at the component level we have exceeded the target," said Harish Lakshman, president, ACMA. "The industry is now worth $40 billion which was the AMP target for 2016. But the mix of domestic sales and exports, of course, do not match with what AMP targeted," he added. According to the AMP, the auto component industry, worth around $14 billion 8 years ago, was targeted to grow to $40-45 billion by 2016 with exports comprising $25 billion. Auto parts have hit the size target but exports, in 13-14, were less than half the target at $10.2 billion. "A new AMP 2026 is being worked out and will be presented once ready," said Lakshman. "As for our export trend, we may have missed the AMP target but we're on the right track in terms of growth. Export-import deficit is actually narrowing. While exports hit $10.2 billion in FY13-14, the year before it was $9.7 billion and imports came down to $12.8 billion in 13-14 from $13.7 billion the year before. Despite last fiscal being a tough year, exports have grown 16% and the import-export deficit is down from $4 billion to $2.6 billion." Indian component makers supply most to EU and North America, both huge markets which are just coming out of a slowdown. "Due to their cost pressures, these markets are substituting European parts suppliers with Indian ones which is why they are key markets for us," said Lakshman. "But the industry is also looking at new export markets like Brazil, South Africa, Mexico and the Asean." Exports may have kept the auto parts sector alive but the domestic slowdown hit it really hard in FY 13-14, causing investments to almost half from $1.5 billion three years ago to just $700 million last fiscal. "We were sitting on surplus capacity due to the slowdown so investments came down sharply," said Lakshman. "But by FY15-16, we will be back to the $1.5 billion level as demand picks up speed. In FY 14-15, investments will be slightly more than last year, around $800 million or so."'
- 'MSI's total sales in 2018-19 stood at 18.62 lakh units while in the April-January period this fiscal, the company reported total sales of 13.18 lakh units. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) expects its sales momentum to continue with gradual improvement in the semiconductor supplies and demand situation remaining robust in the domestic market, a top company official said on Wednesday. In an interaction with PTI on the sidelines of the launch of all-new Baleno, MSI Managing Director and CEO Kenichi Ayukawa said that the company could even reach the 2018-19 peak volume level if the chip supply remained adequate. Advt MSI's total sales in 2018-19 stood at 18.62 lakh units while in the April-January period this fiscal, the company reported total sales of 13.18 lakh units. Ayukawa stated that the auto major lost volumes last year due to COVID-19 and later due to chip shortage. "If the situation improves, we can increase volume supply as demand is there. We can provide good volume to the market. It means growth is continuing. If we can receive a good enough volume of components and with the strong demand, we can easily achieve the 2018-19 volume levels," he stated. He noted that the government has presented a very aggressive Budget that will help in the growth of the economy. Demand remains robust and the only major concern is the shortage of components, Ayukawa stated. "We believe that we have a lot of potential and we have a big production capacity, more than two million. Gujarat's third plant has already started operation, we are adding 2.5 lakh production capacity there. If the condition becomes better, we can produce close to two million volumes easily," Ayukawa said. On new product launches, Ayukawa said: "We already recognise our weak point - we are preparing on those points. That kind of product development is going on. And also model life is like six years and some of the models are reaching the end of life." Advt When asked about the upcoming CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms, he stated that the company is expecting some relaxation. "But depending on the government's direction, we have to follow that. As an industry, we are requesting some benefit..We are not getting a response from the government clearly," Ayukawa said. He noted that while the industry is seeking relief, the government on the other hand is trying to encourage the overall economy. On the company's new plant in Haryana, Ayukawa noted that the project is yet to get final clearances. On exports, he noted that shipments were increasing due to robust demand across global markets. MSI currently exports the bulk of its models to Africa, South East Asia and the Middle East, Ayukawa stated. He noted that the auto major is focussing primarily on CNG and electric when it comes to alternate fuels. "Flex-fuel is also a good idea to reduce oil imports," he added. On EVs, Ayukawa stated that the company remains on course to introduce its first'
