I was wondering if this model (and other models from this org) are commercially usable or are there any gray areas?

It looks commercial usable, with Apache License 2.0 mentionned on their git page https://github.com/openlm-research/open_llama/blob/main/LICENSE
There might also be some legal disputes depending on copywrite contained in the original training material, however the PILE (reportedly used for open_llama) is mostly based on Open Source content
